The Need
Ultrasonic welding is widely used in the electronics industry to weld wires in precision circuits and microcircuits together. It is also used in the automotive industry, medical industry and packaging industry, usually for welding different materials or plastics. The main advantage of ultrasonic welding is that it is a fast welding technique with high energy efficiency. However, it is currently limited to softer materials and thinner workpieces. There is a need for an improved welding process that can effectively weld dissimilar materials, but can also be used for stronger materials and thicker workpieces.
The Technology
Researchers at Ohio State University led by Professor Liu Xun have improved the ultrasonic welding process so that it can be used for stronger and thicker materials. This technology utilizes resistance spot welding technology while still allowing dissimilar materials to be effectively welded together. This technology greatly expands the capabilities of ultrasonic welding.
